'Devastating' Impact On Muslim Communities - Yeshiva World News

nypdaPolice surveillance of the city?s Muslims has had a ?chilling effect? on their lives, Muslim activists and their supporters said Monday.

They responded at a news conference outside New York Police Department headquarters to police claims that the counterterrorism tactics were harmless.

The Muslim American Civil Liberties Coalition and its partners interviewed Muslims around the city and found that many feel they can?t trust anybody, even while praying, and are afraid to participate in social and political activities.

The surveillance has had ?a profound chilling effect on First Amendment-protected speech and worship? at mosques and on campuses, said City Councilman Brad Lander, who joined the news conference and whose constituents include Muslims.

The two entities that worked with the coalition were the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund and the Creating Law Enforcement Accountability & Responsibility, or CLEAR, project of the City University of New York School of Law.

NYPD? surveillance ?has stifled speech, communal life and religious practice and criminalized a broad segment of American Muslims,? fund attorney Nermeen Arastu said.

The surveillance was the subject of a series of stories by The Associated Press that revealed the NYPD intelligence division infiltrated dozens of mosques and Muslim student groups and investigated hundreds.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly has defended the tactics, saying officers observed legal guidelines.

Justin Timberlake joins five-timer's club on 'SNL'

By The Hollywood Reporter

It almost didn?t matter what happened after?Justin Timberlake?s "Saturday Night Live"?opening monologue, because by that time the episode was already the biggest of 2013.

It was the musician-actor?s fifth time hosting, which gave him access to the exclusive ?five-timer's club.? Timberlake was ushered off the stage and into the inner sanctum, where he encountered a slew of "SNL"?vets who had all hosted or performed as the musical guest at least five times.

PHOTOS: 12 'SNL' Sketches Made Into Movies

Paul Simon?greeted Timberlake, as did a pipe-smoking?Steve Martin, who was a tad suspicious of the club?s new member, scoffing when he learned Timberlake couldn't play the banjo.

"He can't do?everything," Martin remarked. The comedian then belittled?Dan Aykroyd, who as a mere one-time host, was reduced to bartending for the clubmembers.?Martin Short?(also not a member of the club) was forced to work as a mistreated waiter.

When?Chevy Chase?appeared next to?Short?and?Martin, Timberlake was thrilled to realize he was standing next to the three amigos. (The trio would appear in full Mariachi garb later to introduce Timberlake?s second musical performance.)

VIDEO: 'SNL' Recap: 'Walking Dead' Recruits Kevin Hart;?Quvenzhane?Wallis Named Pope

Alec Baldwin?and?Tom Hanks?revealed their greatest pleasure of the five-timers club was making?"SNL"?castmembers fight each other. The pair cheer on?Bobby Moynihan?and?Taran Killam?as they went blow-for-blow in a match similar to a disturbing parlor room scene from?"Django Unchained."

?I killed my best friend? Moynihan screamed after the battle. Hanks and Baldwin congratulated him and said he deserved a beer. Shortly after,?Candice Bergen?appeared to demand the other members put the toilet seat down after using it.

In its cold open, "SNL"?took on the death of Venezuelan president?Hugo Chavez. Timberlake played?Elton John, who tailored ?Candle in the Wind" to fit the late president. Among the salient Chavez moments highlighted included the socialist leader calling President?George W. Bush?the devil during a United Nations speech and blaming capitalism for?destroying life on Mars. ?He really said that,? Timberlake insisted.

The star power continued as?Andy Samberg?and Timberlake appeared as their ?D--- in a Box? characters during a dating sketch. Martin and Aykroyd competed against them as two wild and crazy guys, while poor Moynihan failed to compete. It got rather crude for the female contestant, who doesn?t seem to mind.

PHOTOS: Life After the Finale: 16 TV Shows Brought Back From the Dead

Near the show's end, Timberlake revisited romantic comedy territory ala "Friends With Benefits"?in a trailer in which he and a ?cute brunette? (Nasim Pedrad) enjoy a grocery store meet-cute and fall in love. But they are soon torn apart by her secret?she has a penis.

Perfectly capturing the essence of dozens of romantic comedy trailers, the spot for "She?s got a D---"??also featured a ?confused black friend? (Kenan Thompson) and?Eugene Levy?(Fred Armisen), who tells the girl ?if he can?t accept all of you, he doesn?t deserve you."

"SNL"?is next new April 6 with host?Melissa McCarthy?and musical guest Phoenix.

Progressive U.S. pro-Israel group claims Hagel fight as a victory

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - J Street, a liberal Jewish-American lobbying group barely five years old and once shunned by top Israeli officials, is claiming as a victory the fact that Chuck Hagel was confirmed as defense secretary despite opposition from more conservative Jewish groups.

In the week when the most influential Jewish-American group, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, held its annual conference in Washington, J Street has been touting its role in securing Hagel's nomination, which supporters say shows its growing clout.

J Street president Jeremy Ben-Ami said he called Hagel in December as soon as he heard rumors that President Barack Obama wanted the former Republican senator to be his secretary of defense.

It was weeks before the nomination became public, but it took only a day for the group to issue its first statement supporting Hagel, who would endure attacks from groups such as the hawkish Republican-linked Emergency Committee for Israel.

Hagel was heavily criticized for saying in a 2006 interview that "the Jewish lobby intimidates a lot of people" in Congress.

"I called and said, 'Do you realize you need a defense?'" Ben-Ami said.

"I just sensed right away that this was going to be very serious, and people are going to seize on one word, one phrase and they are going to take it and extrapolate it out and make it a blanket smear," Ben-Ami said.

Lou Ann Linehan, a former Hagel staffer who worked with him during the nomination fight, gives credit to J Street for its support. "From the very first, they were always helpful with getting the facts. Just facts," she said.

The White House declined to comment on J Street. Obama aides have made clear privately that they were well aware of the advice the group gave to Hagel's camp about how to get through what would become a rocky confirmation process.

Ben-Ami and other J Street personnel wrote op-eds on Hagel's behalf, set up a website, and created a campaign targeted to Jewish-Americans - "Smear a bagel, not Chuck Hagel" - in which J Street pledged to send bagels to local food banks in honor of conservative Hagel opponent Bill Kristol, for every 18 people who signed a pro-Hagel petition.

SPIN OR INFLUENCE?

Conservatives say J Street overstates its influence, and is not a player compared with AIPAC, which has spent 60 years establishing itself in Washington and drew up to 10,000 people - including dozens of politicians - to its annual conference this past week. AIPAC declined to comment for this story.

"I can easily picture that J Street is spinning (Hagel's confirmation) as a demonstration of their new influence because they've been desperately trying to convince people of their influence ever since they came on the block. But I'm very skeptical," said Joshua Muravchik, a fellow at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and a well-known neo-conservative foreign policy commentator.

Hagel's confirmation, he said, was due more to Obama's clout after just being re-elected and the Israeli government's decision not to get involved.

J Street has made missteps over the years.

Ben-Ami apologized for having made misleading statements about the role of George Soros in 2010, when the group acknowledged accepting large donations from the liberal financier - hated by conservatives - after earlier saying it had not. Soros's organization has said he makes no secret of his donation. The financier contributes to a wide array of groups.

Some observers say J Street also battles a perception that it is too close to the Obama administration, raising questions about its influence if a Republican president succeeds Obama.

"J Street strikes me as being an organization that's much more comfortable in the Democratic party," said Jon Alterman, director of the Middle East Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington.

SMALL STEPS

Ben-Ami was among more than 20 Jewish community leaders, including some from AIPAC, who met Obama on Thursday to provide input for his first trip as president to Israel later this month.

J Street describes itself as "pro-Israel, pro-peace." It is more supportive than many other Jewish groups of a "two-state" Middle East agreement leading to an independent Palestinian state and a secure Israel.

Ben-Ami, who served as an aide to then President Bill Clinton and worked on a series of Democratic political campaigns, founded the group in his basement five years ago.

Today it says it has 50 staff, 15,000 donors and some 180,000 supporters. Its political action committee distributed $1.8 million to candidates last year.

But the going has not been easy. Israel's ambassador to Washington, Michael Oren, declined an invitation to speak at the group's inaugural 2009 conference - where Hagel delivered the keynote - although the two reportedly have since reconciled. The Israeli embassy did not respond to a request for comment.

In 2010, some politicians, including New York Democratic Congressman Gary Ackerman, publicly rejected J Street's backing, under pressure from conservative Jewish American leaders and Israeli officials who said its positions were anti-Israel.

In last November's election, it endorsed 71 candidates - all Democrats - for federal offices. While it's unclear how influential the J Street endorsement was, 70 of the 71 won.

Just last year, after the United Nations approved the de facto recognition of Palestinian statehood, J Street successfully opposed efforts by more conservative groups to close the Palestinian office in Washington in retaliation. Ben-Ami counts that as a victory for J Street's moderate position.

A possible sign of better relations with Israel came last month when members of a congressional delegation to Israel organized by J Street met with top government officials. Three years ago, Israel's foreign ministry had boycotted the J Street delegation.

"In 2013, it's fair to say that J Street has established its place as an important advocacy group in the larger pro-Israel community," said Daniel Kurtzer, who was U.S. ambassador to Egypt under Clinton and to Israel from 2001 to 2005 during the administration of George W. Bush.

1 region, 2 functions: Brain cells' multitasking key to understanding overall brain function

Thursday, March 7, 2013

A region of the brain known to play a key role in visual and spatial processing has a parallel function: sorting visual information into categories, according to a new study by researchers at the University of Chicago.

Primates are known to have a remarkable ability to place visual stimuli into familiar and meaningful categories, such as fruit or vegetables. They can also direct their spatial attention to different locations in a scene and make spatially-targeted movements, such as reaching.

The study, published in the March issue of Neuron, shows that these very different types of information can be simultaneously encoded within the posterior parietal cortex. The research brings scientists a step closer to understanding how the brain interprets visual stimuli and solves complex tasks.

"We found that multiple functions can be mapped onto a particular region of the brain and even onto individual brain cells in that region," said study author David Freedman, PhD, assistant professor of neurobiology at the University of Chicago. "These functions overlap. This particular brain area, even its individual neurons, can independently encode both spatial and cognitive signals."

Freedman studies the effects of learning on the brain and how information is stored in short-term memory, with a focus on the areas that process visual stimuli. To examine this phenomenon, he has taught monkeys to play a simple video game in which they learn to assign moving visual patterns into categories.

"The task is a bit like a baseball umpire calling balls and strikes," he said, "since the monkeys have to sort the various motion patterns into two groups, or categories."

The monkeys master the tasks over a few weeks of training. Once they do, the researchers record electrical signals from parietal lobe neurons while the subjects perform the categorization task. By measuring electrical activity patterns of these neurons, the researchers can decode the information conveyed by the neurons' activity.

"The activity patterns in these parietal neurons carry strong information about the category that each motion pattern gets assigned to during the task," Freedman said.

Over the years, his team's work on categorization has zeroed in on the lateral intraparietal (LIP) area. Studies have shown that this area is vital to directing spatial attention and eye movements. But it had been unclear how an area involved in spatial attention and eye movements could also play a role in non-spatial functions such as visual categorization.

To compare spatial and category functions in the parietal lobe, Freedman and his team added a twist to the monkeys' task. During the category task, the researchers required the subjects to make eye-movements to visual cues at various positions on the computer screen, but the subjects still had to categorize the visual patterns at the same time that they made these eye movements.

Since this parietal brain area is known to be involved in eye movements, the eye movements could have disrupted category information in that part of the brain. Instead, parietal brain cells showed a simultaneous and independent encoding of both eye-movement and category information?multiplexing of information at the level of single brain cells.

"These signals rode right on top of the eye-movement signals," said the study's first author, Chris Rishel, PhD, a recent graduate from Freedman's laboratory. "We could decode both the eye-movement and the category signals with high accuracy. This tells us that different kinds of information that are usually considered quite unrelated were simultaneously and independently represented by neurons in this particular brain area."

Their results, the study authors note, "support the possibility that LIP plays a key role in transforming visual signals in earlier sensory areas into abstract category signals during category-based decision-making tasks."

What does the brain gain from this territorial arrangement?

"There has long been a tendency to look at the many distinct anatomical areas of the cerebral cortex of the brain and to assume that each area is like a specialized module that plays a very specific function." Freedman said. "Our results support the growing sense that most, if not all, of these brain areas have multiple overlapping roles."

A brain that includes such overlapping functional centers may be more efficient, Freedman suggests. "It makes mapping these regions more complicated for scientists like us, but it may boost the brain's capacity. If each area can do a number of different things, you can squeeze a lot more function into the same space."

A next step is to understand how neuronal category representations develop in LIP neurons during the learning process, the authors said.

Rolls-Royce Wraith picks gears using GPS, keeps your Spirit of ...

WORLD DEBUT FOR ROLLS-ROYCE WRAITH AT GENEVA MOTOR SHOW

- Elegant fastback design hints at dynamic prowess of the most powerful Rolls-Royce ever: 624 bhp/465 kW, 800 Nm from 1,500 rpm : 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds (0-62 in 4.6)
- Debut of Satellite Aided Transmission. A technology that uses GPS mapping data to ensure the correct gear is always pre-selected for the road terrain ahead
- Voice activated connectivity augments effortlessness ? the 'on-board valet'
- Canadel Panelling sweeps through a sumptuous, contemporary and yacht-like interior cabin

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars proudly presents the world debut of Wraith, the most powerful and dynamic Rolls-Royce in history. At its heart lie hallmark Rolls-Royce attributes of luxury, refinement and hand-craftsmanship, but the new model from the world's pinnacle super-luxury marque also presents a unique character defined by power, style and drama. With just a hint of the noir.

"Today we launch the ultimate gentlemen's gran turismo, a car that embodies the spirit of Charles Stewart Rolls," commented Torsten M?ller-?tv?s, CEO Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. "The most powerful Rolls-Royce in history, Wraith promises the sense of adventure and speed that drove our founding forefather. But of course, Wraith's starting point is luxury, refinement and quality, traits that remain as important to Rolls-Royce customers today as they were more than a century ago."

Rolls-Royce Chairman and BMW Group board member Harald Kr?ger added the following: "The BMW Group today reconfirms its full commitment to the future of Rolls-Royce. Growth and a prosperous future lie ahead thanks to continued investment, careful brand stewardship and the launch of groundbreaking new models like Rolls-Royce Wraith, a magnificent addition to the product range."

In profile, Wraith's sweeping fastback design gives the car its unique character. Bold lines, tension in the panels and a raked rear screen evoke the image of a world class athlete poised in the starting blocks. Further expression of dynamic intent can be seen in Wraith's deeply recessed grille, wide rear track and dramatic two-tone presentation.

Coach doors open to reveal a sumptuous interior complete with softest Phantom-grade leathers and expanses of wood called Canadel Panelling. Named after the famous cove in the South of France where Sir Henry Royce and his design and engineering teams spent their winters, this contemporary and tactile finish sweeps through the interior, cosseting four occupants in a space bathed in light and warmth.

The interior ambiance is complemented by Starlight Headliner, a Bespoke feature available beyond Phantom family cars for the first time. 1,340 fibre optic lamps are hand-woven into the roof lining to give the impression of a glittering, starry night sky.

Performance delivers on the promise of Wraith's styling. Power delivery is effortless, but dramatic, thanks to a V12 engine married to 8-speed automatic ZF transmission. 624 bhp / 465kW is available to the driver while the 0-60 mph sprint is achieved in 4.4 seconds, compared with 563 bhp / 420kW and 0-60 in 4.7 seconds for Ghost.

From 1,500 rpm 800 Nm of torque is available (780 Nm for Ghost), while a wide rear track, shorter wheelbase and lower roof height further contribute to the most powerful, involving driving experience of any Rolls-Royce in history. The car's suspension has also been tuned to minimise body roll and discreetly amplify feedback when cornering; while steering weight is heavier at high speeds and lighter at low speeds adding to the spirited drive.

However, Wraith is no GT bruiser. Agility improvements have been achieved with absolutely no compromise to the sensation of riding on a bed of air. Furthermore, the debut of Satellite Aided Transmission (SAT) technology takes the powertrain to a new level of effortless delivery, one that perfectly suits the Rolls-Royce brand.

Satellite Aided Transmission uses GPS data to see beyond what the driver sees; it anticipates his next move based on location and current driving style, then selects the most appropriate gear for the terrain ahead. Corners, motorway junctions and roundabouts are all anticipated in advance meaning Wraith is constantly poised to deliver on its promise of performance.

A more polished, effortless driving experience and even better response brings a new, more dynamic dimension to the famous Rolls-Royce trait, waftability.

For over a century a Rolls-Royce motor car has featured technologies designed to support occupants discreetly, delivering a peerless driving experience epitomised by the term 'effortlessness'. In every Rolls-Royce these assist the driver when called upon, but are prepared to return without fuss to the background when no longer required.

Advances in mechanical and electrical technology deliver systems like head-up display, adaptive headlights and Wraith's keyless opening boot. But improvements in connectivity have taken the human-machine interface to a new level of sophistication, a suite of aids that could be likened to a contemporary on-board valet.

Voice activation commands, for example, come with a one-touch call button located on the steering wheel. A destination no longer requires manual input from a navigation menu and route assistance begins immediately, on-screen and via audio guidance following a voice command such as "navigate to Piccadilly in London."

Additional improvements in communications come in the design and functionality of the elegant Spirit of Ecstasy Rotary Controller. This allows navigation through on-screen functions using a touch pad that features pinch and pull functionality to echo smart phone usage. Letters can also be 'drawn' onto the pad by hand rather than by scrolling through a series of available characters on-screen.

In Europe, Wraith will be priced at c. ?245k. Confirmation and further pricing details in all markets will be revealed later in the year.

First deliveries of Wraith will be made to customers in the final quarter of 2013.

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) ? President Hugo Chavez died of a massive heart attack after great suffering and inaudibly mouthed his desire to live, the head of Venezuela's presidential guard said late Wednesday.

"He couldn't speak but he said it with his lips ... 'I don't want to die. Please don't let me die,' because he loved his country, he sacrificed himself for his country," Gen. Jose Ornella told The Associated Press.

The general said he spent the last two years with Chavez, including his final moments, as Venezuela's president of 14 years battled an unspecified cancer in the pelvic region.

Ornella spoke to the AP outside the military academy where Chavez's body lay in state. He said Chavez's cancer was very advanced when death came but gave no details.

Ornella did not respond when asked if the cancer had spread to Chavez's lungs.

The government announced on the eve of Chavez's death that he had suffered a severe new respiratory infection. It was the second such infection reported by officials after Chavez underwent his fourth cancer surgery in Cuba on Dec. 11.

Venezuelan authorities have not said what kind of cancer Chavez had or specified exactly where tumors were removed.

During the first lung infection, near the end of December, doctors implanted a tracheal tube to ease Chavez's breathing, but breathing insufficiency persisted and worsened, the government said.

Ornella said that Chavez had "the best" doctors from all over the world but that they never discussed the president's condition in front of him.

The general said he didn't know precisely what kind of cancer afflicted Chavez, but added: "He suffered a lot."

He said that Chavez knew when he spoke to Venezuelans on Dec. 8, three days before his final surgery in Cuba, that "there was very little hope he would make it out of that operation."

It was Chavez's fourth cancer surgery and previous interventions had been followed by chemotherapy and radiation.

Ornella echoed the concern of Vice President Nicolas Maduro that some sort of foul play was involved in Chavez's cancer.

"I think it will be 50 years before they declassify a document (that) I think (will show) the hand of the enemy is involved," he said.

The general didn't identify who he was talking about, but Maduro suggested possible U.S. involvement on Tuesday. The U.S. State Department called the allegation absurd.

Maduro, Chavez's self-anointed successor, said Chavez died Tuesday afternoon in a Caracas military hospital.

The government said Chavez, 58, had been there since returning from Cuba on Feb. 18.

Stocks gain for fifth day on unemployment report

NEW YORK (AP) ? The Dow pushed further into unchartered territory Thursday, having surpassed its previous all-time high two days ago. The catalyst was a government report on employment that gave succor to stock market bulls.

Stocks started higher after the Labor Department reported that the number of Americans seeking unemployment aid fell by 7,000 last week, driving the four-week average to its lowest in five years. The drop is a positive sign ahead of Friday's employment report.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 36 points, or 0.3 percent, to 14,332 as of 2 p.m. Eastern. The Standard & Poor's 500 gained two points, or 0.1 percent, to 1,544. Both indexes are on course to log their fifth straight daily advance.

The Dow barreled through a record high Tuesday and has since added to those gains. The S&P 500 is also closing in on its own record high of 1,565, which was also reached on Oct. 9, 2007, the same day of the Dow's previous peak. The S&P would need to rise 22 points, or 1.4 percent, to set a record.

Investors have been buying stocks on optimism that employers are slowly starting to hire again and that the housing market is recovering. Growing company earnings are also encouraging investors to get into the market. The Dow is 9.4 percent higher this year and the broader S&P 500 is up 8.2 percent.

"If you have a multi-year time horizon, equities are an attractive asset, but don't be surprised to see some volatility, especially after the big run we've had," said Michael Sheldon, chief market strategist at RDM Financial Group.

Boeing led the Dow higher Wednesday, advancing $1.85 to $80.91 following reports that U.S. regulators were poised to approve a plan within days to allow the plane maker to begin test flights of its 787 Dreamliner. The 787 fleet has been grounded since Jan. 16 because of safety concerns about the plane's batteries. Twenty one stocks in the 30-member index advanced.

Time Warner rose 83 cents to $56.29 after the media company said late Wednesday that it will spin off its magazine publishing business, which includes Time, Sports Illustrated and People, into a publicly traded company by the end of the year.

Five of 10 industry groups in the S&P 500 advanced, with financials leading the gains. Bank of America added 24 cents to $12.17 and JPMorgan Chase gained 52 cents to $50.54.

Any decline in stocks may be short-lived, as investors who have missed out on the rally since the start of the year jump into the market, says Jeffery Saut, chief investment strategist at Raymond James.

"The rally is going to go higher than most people think," says Saut. "This thing has caught most money managers flat-footed."

The stock market's rally this year has been helped in no small part by continuing economic stimulus from the Federal Reserve. The U.S. central bank began buying bonds in January 2009 and is still purchasing $85 billion each month in Treasury bonds and mortgage-backed securities. That has kept interest rates near historic lows, reducing borrowing costs and encouraging investors to move money out of conservative investments like bonds and into stocks.

The Nasdaq composite advanced six points, 0.2 percent, to 3,228.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note, which moves inversely to its price, rose to 1.99 percent from 1.94 percent.

Among stocks making big moves:

? PetSmart fell $4.47 to $62.09 after the company reported its fiscal fourth-quarter earnings. Profits for the pet store chain rose but its forecast for this year disappointed investors.

? Pier 1 Imports fell $1.15 to $22.09 after the home decor company issued an earnings forecast that was below Wall Street analysts' estimates.

? Supermarket chain Kroger rose 98 cents to $30.34 after the company's fourth quarter profit handily beat Wall Street expectations.

? Gap rose $1.21 to $35.68 after the clothing retailer said a key revenue measure rose more than expected in February, helped by sales at its Gap and Old Navy stores. The company had been scheduled to release the sales figures after the market closed, but put them out after a transcript of its recorded sales call appeared on the website seekingalpha.com, halting the shares.
